HOT stories for today

Market wrap:

  • Stocks pushed deeper into record territory on Wednesday, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite both closing at fresh all-time highs as optimism over a possible U.S.-Iran peace deal continued to support risk appetite. The S&P 500 rose 0.80%, while the Nasdaq climbed 1.59% for its 11th consecutive gain. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lagged, falling 72.27 points, or 0.15%. Markets have been buoyed in recent sessions by growing hopes that the conflict between Washington and Tehran could be nearing an end. In an interview with Fox Business that aired Wednesday, President Donald Trump said the war was “very close to over” and repeated that Iran wants to “make a deal very badly.”
  • A White House official said Tuesday that a second round of negotiations between the U.S. and Iran is under discussion, though no formal timetable has been set. The latest advance comes after the S&P 500 on Monday erased all of its losses since the start of the Iran war. Risk sentiment also carried into overseas markets, with Japan’s Nikkei 225 reaching a record high, while bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies extended their gains. Investors are now looking ahead to another busy session for earnings and economic data. PepsiCo, Travelers, U.S. Bancorp, Abbott Laboratories and Charles Schwab are due to report before Thursday’s open. Weekly jobless claims, along with March capacity utilization and industrial production, are also on the calendar.

Hormuz Closure Spurs Global Push for Oil Alternatives

  • Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz is accelerating efforts to bypass one of the world’s most important energy chokepoints, a shift that could reshape oil flows and infrastructure investment for years to come. Saudi Arabia and the UAE already operate pipelines that can divert about 8.5 million barrels a day away from the strait, and Gulf states are now weighing expansions and new overland routes to reduce their dependence on the waterway. Projects once seen as too expensive or politically difficult are being reconsidered as the conflict highlights the risks of relying on Hormuz.
  •  Among the options under discussion are expanding Saudi Arabia’s East-West pipeline, increasing capacity on the UAE’s Fujairah route and potentially reviving older connections to the Mediterranean. Storage is also emerging as a priority, particularly in Asia, where the disruption has exposed how vulnerable fuel supplies can be. The limits are still clear. Pipeline capacity is already tight, infrastructure remains vulnerable to attack and land routes cannot fully replace the scale of seaborne exports. Even so, the crisis is likely to accelerate long-term investment in alternative transport routes and storage, gradually weakening Iran’s leverage over global energy markets.

Stocks on the move:

  • Allbirds (BIRD): soared 582.33% to close at $16.99 after announcing a $50 million convertible financing facility to support its AI pivot, despite previously agreeing to sell its assets and intellectual property for about $39 million. The company’s market value had fallen to roughly $22 million by Tuesday, down sharply from a peak valuation of about $4 billion.
  • Robinhood (HOOD): rose 10.41% on Wednesday after gaining 10.4% the previous session. The move came as a rule change removed the $25,000 minimum equity requirement and eliminated the limit of four day trades in five business days for smaller margin accounts.
