HOT stories for today
Market wrap:
- US stocks rebounded on Tuesday, snapping a three-session losing streak as stronger-than-expected corporate earnings and gains in semiconductor shares lifted sentiment. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 385 points, or 0.7%, to 52,224.64. The S&P 500 advanced 0.9% to 7,509.20, while the Nasdaq Composite gained 1.3% to close at 25,837.21. 3M (MMM) surged more than 7% after the industrial company reported second-quarter earnings that exceeded expectations. Semiconductor stocks also rallied, with the VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH) climbing more than 4%. Marvell Technology (MRVL) gained over 6%, Astera Labs (ALAB) rose 3%, Micron Technology (MU) jumped 12%, and Intel (INTC) advanced 8%. The rebound followed a volatile session on Monday as investors assessed the risk of further escalation in the US-Iran conflict.
- US Central Command conducted a 10th consecutive night of strikes after President Donald Trump declared the ceasefire over, while Iran targeted US military assets across the Middle East and Houthi forces announced a maritime embargo against Saudi Arabia. Oil prices fluctuated as markets monitored renewed diplomatic efforts to mediate the conflict. Attention now returns to earnings season, with investors assessing whether strong demand for AI infrastructure and software can sustain elevated technology-sector valuations. Second-quarter earnings growth expectations have risen to 25%, according to FactSet, though CFRA Research warned that profit growth may be approaching an inflection point that could create headwinds in the coming quarters.
Alphabet Earnings Put AI Spending in Focus
- Alphabet (GOOGL) will open Big Tech’s second-quarter earnings season on Wednesday, with investors looking for evidence that record spending on artificial-intelligence infrastructure is translating into stronger revenue growth. Analysts expect the Google parent to report $117 billion in revenue and earnings of $2.87 per share. Google Cloud remains a key focus, with Wall Street projecting 63% year-over-year growth as demand continues to exceed available capacity. Alphabet is expected to have spent about $45 billion on capital expenditures during the quarter, part of a projected $180 billion to $190 billion investment program for 2026.
- Rising memory and data-center equipment costs could push spending even higher. Investors will also be watching for signs of broader enterprise adoption of Gemini, as Alphabet faces pressure to demonstrate that its AI investments are moving beyond consumer experimentation and generating returns at scale. Additional attention will center on reported delays to Alphabet’s latest Gemini model, recent departures from Google DeepMind and plans for a new chip designed to run AI models more efficiently.
