HOT stories for today

Market wrap:

  • U.S. stocks advanced Thursday as easing oil prices and renewed hopes for diplomacy between Washington and Tehran lifted risk appetite. The Nasdaq Composite rose 1.3%, while the S&P 500 gained 0.8%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.3%, helped by broad strength across technology and semiconductor shares. Sentiment improved after President Donald Trump said Iran had reached out to pursue a deal. Officials from Qatar and Pakistan are also working to bring the two sides back to the negotiating table, easing concerns that the latest escalation could further disrupt energy markets. Chipmakers helped lead the rally, as investors remained optimistic that strong earnings growth could support a broader advance beyond the largest technology names.
  • Micron climbed nearly 5% after announcing additional multibillion-dollar investments in U.S. semiconductor production, while Meta moved further into the AI coding market in an effort to compete with Anthropic and OpenAI. The positive tone carried into Asia on Friday. South Korea’s Kospi jumped 4.6% and the Kosdaq surged 5.9%, while Japan’s Nikkei 225 rose 1.5% as regional technology shares followed Wall Street higher. Investors are now awaiting SK Hynix’s U.S. market debut, with the South Korean memory-chip maker reportedly pricing its American depositary receipts at $149 each. Delta Air Lines is also set to report second-quarter earnings before Friday’s opening bell.

SK Hynix Eyes Wall Street Debut to Close 'Korea Discount'

  • SK Hynix is set to begin trading on the Nasdaq on Friday, with investors watching whether the listing can help narrow the company's long-standing "Korea discount" and boost its global valuation. The South Korean memory-chip leader currently trades at about 4.8 times forward earnings, well below both the semiconductor industry average and U.S. rival Micron Technology, despite its dominant position in the fast-growing high-bandwidth memory (HBM) market that powers AI accelerators. Analysts believe a Nasdaq listing will improve access for international investors, particularly large U.S. institutions, while increasing liquidity and strengthening corporate governance visibility.
  • Although many expect the valuation gap to narrow, most do not believe it will disappear completely. The company is expected to raise roughly $26.5 billion through its U.S. listing, though analysts note the greater benefit may be broader access to global capital rather than the proceeds themselves. SK Hynix is forecast to generate enough operating cash flow to fund the majority of its aggressive investment plans over the next two years. Investors will also be watching whether SK Hynix can maintain its leadership in the AI memory market. While demand for HBM remains exceptionally strong, rivals Samsung and Micron continue to expand production, shifting the focus from market share to which company can add manufacturing capacity fast enough to meet surging AI demand.

Stocks on the move:

  • Micron Technology (MU): Shares rose more than 7% after the memory-chip maker said it will invest up to $3 billion to strengthen the U.S. semiconductor supply chain. The stock also benefited from a broader rally across chipmakers.
  • MARA Holdings (MARA): Shares surged 15% after the bitcoin miner and digital-infrastructure company agreed to acquire more than 1,200 acres in Matagorda County, Texas, from renewable-fuels company HIF USA. The site is expected to more than double MARA’s total power capacity to about 4.8 gigawatts.
  • Opendoor Technologies (OPEN): Shares jumped 10.6% to $5.30 on volume of roughly 112 million shares, more than double the stock’s recent average. The move followed Opendoor’s addition to the Russell 3000 after the June 26 close.
  • Meta Platforms (META): Shares gained 3.9% after the company launched Muse Spark 1.1 with $20 in free credits and pricing of $1.25 per million input tokens and $4.25 per million output tokens. Bloomberg reported that Meta’s pricing is roughly one-quarter of competing top-tier models.
