Big Tech Earnings: Tesla, IBM After Close 22/04/2026

HOT stories for today

Market wrap:

  • The S&P 500 fell 0.63%, while the Nasdaq Composite lost 0.59%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 293 points, or 0.59%. After the close, President Donald Trump said he would extend the two-week U.S. ceasefire, citing what he described as a “seriously fractured” government in Tehran. Even so, the timeline remained uncertain after Iran's lack of commitment led Vice President JD Vance to pause plans to join peace talks. Despite the geopolitical strain, Stephanie Aliaga, a global market strategist at JPMorgan Asset Management, said she expects the rally to continue, supported by the artificial-intelligence boom and improving productivity. In other policy developments, UPS and FedEx have begun filing for tariff refunds. On Capitol Hill, lawmakers questioned Kevin Warsh, Trump’s nominee for Federal Reserve chair, who said he would preserve the central bank’s independence and would not act as a political proxy.
  • Senator Thom Tillis also defended the Fed, calling attacks on Chair Jerome Powell and other officials a threat to the institution’s independence. Adding to the technology backdrop, Bloomberg reported after 5 p.m. that unauthorized users had accessed Mythos, Anthropic’s most advanced model to date. Energy was the only S&P 500 sector to finish higher Tuesday, as oil-sensitive shares rose on renewed concern that the conflict could intensify again. The economic calendar is relatively light on Wednesday, but investors will be watching another round of earnings, with results due before the open from AT&T, Boeing, Boston Scientific, GE Vernova, CME Group and Moody’s, Tesla after market close.

Tesla Earnings Put Robotaxi Story to the Test

  • Tesla’s quarterly results are likely to play a secondary role when the company reports Wednesday, with investors focused more on robotaxis and humanoid robots than near-term earnings. Wall Street expects first-quarter adjusted earnings of 37 cents a share on revenue of about $22.2 billion, according to FactSet. But recent misses in electric-vehicle deliveries and energy deployments have shifted attention away from Tesla’s core business and toward its longer-term growth bets. The robotaxi rollout remains central to that story. Tesla recently expanded the service to Dallas and Houston, though the scale remains limited and some analysts have questioned how quickly the company can grow beyond early test markets. Investment spending is also drawing scrutiny.
  • Tesla has guided to at least $20 billion in capital expenditures this year, with some analysts expecting that figure to rise further as projects tied to chips, infrastructure and robotics move forward. That has raised fresh questions about funding needs, even as Tesla retains a strong balance sheet. Investors are also looking for updates on Optimus, the company’s humanoid robot, as progress on autonomy and robotics continues to matter more for valuation than the quarter’s headline numbers. Any signs that timelines are slipping further could weigh on sentiment even if the financial results themselves come in close to expectations.

Stocks on the move:

  • Adobe (ADBE): rose more than 2% after the company approved a $25 billion share repurchase program through April 2030, even as the stock remains down over 29% year to date.
  • United Airlines (UAL): gained about 1% despite issuing weaker guidance for the current quarter and full year, citing higher fuel costs, even as first-quarter earnings and revenue beat expectations.
  • Capital One Financial (COF): fell nearly 4% after reporting first-quarter earnings and revenue that came in below analyst estimates.
  • Interactive Brokers (IBKR): slipped almost 2% after first-quarter revenue missed expectations, while adjusted earnings came in line with forecasts.
