Netflix misses, Tesla up next 22/10/2025

HOT stories for today

Market wrap:

  • U.S. equities ended Tuesday’s session virtually unchanged, a rare pause in a market that’s seen sharp moves in recent weeks. The S&P 500 closed flat, while earlier strength in blue chips, bolstered by solid earnings from Coca-Cola, briefly pushed the Dow Jones Industrial Average to a new peak above 47,000. The Nasdaq Composite slipped modestly as momentum in risk-on technology names faded.
  • President Donald Trump cast uncertainty over his planned meeting next week with Chinese President Xi Jinping, saying, “Maybe it won’t happen.” Investors are now turning their focus to Friday’s September consumer price index report, one of the few data releases still on schedule amid the ongoing U.S. government shutdown. The inflation print will offer key signals for policymakers ahead of the Federal Reserve’s late-October meeting. Across Asia, markets traded mostly lower as investors digested Japan’s latest trade figures. SoftBank shares tumbled more than 5%. Meanwhile, gold pulled back from recent highs, and Bitcoin also struggled to find direction.

NFLX misses, TSLA up next

  • U.S. markets digested a wave of earnings on Tuesday evening, with Netflix shares sliding more than 6% after the company missed profit estimates due to a one-time $619 million tax charge in Brazil. Revenue rose 17% to $11.51 billion, in line with forecasts, while EPS of $5.87 fell short of expectations. Executives said fundamentals remain solid, highlighting a strong content pipeline and record ad sales expected to more than double this year.
  • Next up is Tesla, set to report after Wednesday’s close. Analysts expect $26.4 billion in revenue, up 17% from the prior quarter, and adjusted earnings of 55 cents a share, down 24% year-over-year. Investors will focus on demand trends following the expiration of U.S. EV tax credits and on CEO Elon Musk’s push into robotics and autonomous driving. Tesla’s annual meeting on Nov. 6 may also bring clarity on Musk’s massive compensation plan, while analysts remain split on whether his AI ambitions can propel the company’s valuation toward the $3 trillion mark envisioned by bullish investors.
