Quiet Week Ahead on the Economic Front 21/09/2026

Market Wrap
U.S. stocks finished Friday mixed as investors closed out a volatile week marked by rising Treasury yields, oil above $100 a barrel and the Federal Reserve's first interest-rate increase in three years.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 95 points, or 0.2%, to 51,682.64. The S&P 500 edged 0.2% higher to 7,650.50, while the Nasdaq Composite gained 0.4% to 26,522.55.
Rising Treasury yields continued to pressure equities following the Fed's quarter-point rate increase, while elevated energy prices kept inflation concerns firmly in focus. West Texas Intermediate crude fell 1.6% Friday to settle at $100.30 a barrel, ending the week little changed but remaining above the psychologically important $100 level.
For the week, the Dow dropped 1.7%, marking its third consecutive weekly decline and its worst performance since March. The S&P 500 slipped about 0.1%, while the technology-heavy Nasdaq bucked the trend with a 0.7% gain. Financial stocks were among the weakest areas of the market, with the sector falling more than 2% over the week.
U.S. stock futures moved higher early Monday as investors turned their attention to a fresh set of geopolitical and economic catalysts.
Middle East tensions remain a key risk after another escalation over the weekend, keeping energy markets and the potential impact on inflation in focus.
Investors are also looking ahead to a key U.S.-China summit this week, with trade, tariffs, critical minerals and artificial intelligence expected to feature prominently in discussions.
With Treasury yields elevated, oil still above $100 and the Fed back in tightening mode, markets enter the new week balancing renewed technology strength against persistent inflation, geopolitical and interest-rate risks.
U.S.-China Talks Turn to AI and Trade Ahead of Trump-Xi Summit
U.S. and Chinese officials held what Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent described as "successful" talks ahead of the Sept. 24 meeting between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, with artificial intelligence and trade emerging as key areas of discussion.
Bessent met Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng ahead of the Washington summit, where the two sides are expected to address tariffs, critical minerals, technology and broader economic relations.
One of the most notable developments was discussion of a potential "U.S.-China AI Dialogue." Bessent said Washington proposed creating a notification mechanism for serious AI-related incidents, aimed at increasing transparency between the world's two largest AI powers.
Trade negotiations also advanced. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said the two countries have "operationalized" the U.S.-China Board of Trade, designed to facilitate negotiations by identifying categories of goods that could potentially receive separate treatment during future trade disputes.
The talks come ahead of a closely watched summit as Washington and Beijing remain locked in competition over trade and technological leadership. Markets will be watching for progress on tariffs, rare-earth supplies, agricultural purchases and AI policy, with a key portion of the current U.S.-China trade truce scheduled to expire Nov. 10.
