Markets Slip into Summer Holiday Mode 17/08/2026

Market Wrap

US stocks edged lower on Friday as investors took a breather following the S&P 500’s latest record-setting session, though the benchmark still secured its third consecutive weekly gain.

The S&P 500 slipped 0.2% to 7,785.76, while the Nasdaq Composite declined 0.3% to 26,729.16. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 108 points, or 0.2%, to 53,732.41.

For the week, the S&P 500 gained 0.4% and the Nasdaq added 0.1%, marking a third straight weekly advance for both indexes. The Dow lagged, falling 0.6%.

Equities have remained resilient despite continued tensions in the Middle East and lingering concerns around the AI trade. Softer CPI and PPI readings last week provided additional support, easing some inflation concerns and allowing investors to reassess the outlook for Federal Reserve policy.

The calendar is lighter this week, potentially leaving markets more sensitive to shifts in sentiment and geopolitical headlines. Wednesday’s Federal Reserve meeting minutes will be the main macro event, offering fresh insight into policymakers’ thinking on inflation and interest rates.

Retail earnings will also take center stage, with Home Depot (HD) reporting Tuesday, Lowe’s (LOW) on Wednesday and Walmart (WMT) on Thursday. On the economic front, investors will watch the August Empire State Manufacturing Index and NAHB Housing Market Index for further clues on the strength of the US economy.

Oil Stays Calm Despite Tensions

Oil prices have remained surprisingly contained despite the Strait of Hormuz remaining largely blocked, continued tanker attacks and stalled US-Iran negotiations. The reason may have less to do with geopolitics and more to do with weakening global demand.

Brent crude has fallen about 1.7% in August, while WTI is down roughly 2.7%. The International Energy Agency now expects global oil demand to decline by 1.6 million barrels per day in 2026, a significantly larger drop than previously forecast as elevated fuel prices weigh on consumption.

Supply conditions are also helping cap prices. US commercial crude inventories unexpectedly surged by 17.4 million barrels in the latest reported week — the second-largest increase on record — compared with expectations for a decline.

The combination of weaker demand, elevated inventories and alternative supply routes means markets increasingly believe the world can tolerate prolonged disruption in the Strait of Hormuz. Some analysts expect crude prices to continue easing even without a comprehensive US-Iran agreement.

But weaker crude prices do not necessarily mean cheaper energy for consumers. Refining constraints have pushed margins for gasoline, diesel and jet fuel sharply higher, with crack spreads reaching record levels.

The bigger concern is what weak oil demand may be signaling about the global economy. If consumption continues to deteriorate despite major geopolitical supply disruptions, it could point to softer economic activity ahead.
