Hike or Hold? Fed Decision Takes Center Stage 28/10/2026

Market Wrap

U.S. stocks advanced Tuesday as chipmakers extended their rebound, lifting the Nasdaq to its strongest session in nearly a month ahead of the Federal Reserve's policy decision and major technology earnings.

The Nasdaq Composite climbed 1.18% to 26,477.81, while the S&P 500 gained 0.60% to 7,722.60. The Dow Jones Industrial Average edged up 15.99 points, or 0.03%, to 52,377.57, as weakness in Boeing offset broader gains.

Artificial-intelligence shares led the advance for a second session. Broadcom (AVGO) rallied about 4%, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) rose more than 5%, and Tesla (TSLA) gained roughly 4%, while Nvidia (NVDA) also advanced.

The rebound followed Anthropic's IPO filing and fresh AI infrastructure deals, helping restore some confidence after last week's technology selloff. Still, gains remained concentrated in heavyweight growth shares rather than the broader market.

Boeing (BA) tumbled nearly 11% after its quarterly results, limiting the Dow's advance. Energy stocks also lagged as oil prices retreated amid renewed diplomatic efforts concerning the Middle East.

Investors now face a pivotal Wednesday. The Federal Reserve is widely expected to leave its benchmark interest-rate range at 3.75%–4%, with the policy statement due at 2:00 p.m. ET and Chair Kevin Warsh's press conference at 2:30 p.m.

Microsoft (MSFT) and Alphabet (GOOGL) report after the closing bell, putting AI demand, infrastructure spending and margins back in focus. Their outlooks could determine whether the semiconductor-led rebound extends.

With the Fed decision and megacap earnings arriving within hours of each other, traders should prepare for sharp moves across equities, bonds and the dollar.

Fed Decision Puts Kevin Warsh and Inflation Risks in Focus

The Federal Reserve heads into Wednesday's policy announcement under pressure to balance persistent inflation risks against signs of slowing economic momentum, with investors focused as much on Chair Kevin Warsh's guidance as on the rate decision itself.

Interest-rate futures point overwhelmingly to no change in the federal funds target range of 3.75%–4%. A hold would shift attention to the Fed's assessment of inflation, energy prices and the possibility of further tightening later this year.

The decision comes amid renewed volatility in oil markets and concern that higher energy costs could complicate efforts to contain inflation. Treasury yields have also been sensitive to shifts in rate expectations.

Bank of America has argued that inflation pressures could justify a quarter-point increase, although such a move would run against the market's dominant expectation and could unsettle risk assets.

Investors will scrutinize Warsh's press conference for clues about the December meeting, the balance of risks to growth and inflation, and how policymakers interpret the latest economic releases.

The announcement is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. ET, followed by the press conference at 2:30 p.m. ET. With Microsoft and Alphabet earnings due after the close, Wednesday presents an unusually concentrated set of market catalysts.

For equities, the key question is whether the Fed can maintain a steady policy stance without signaling that borrowing costs must remain restrictive for longer.

A more hawkish tone could pressure high-valuation technology stocks, while a reassuring message may help sustain this week's rebound.
