GE Earnings and Middle East Tensions in Focus 20/10/2026

Market Wrap
U.S. stocks ended mixed Monday as investors returned to technology shares following last week's sharp AI-driven selloff, helping the Nasdaq and S&P 500 recover some of their recent losses.
The Nasdaq Composite climbed 1.11% to 26,430.89, while the S&P 500 gained 0.41% to close at 7,690.73. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 36 points, or 0.07%, to finish at 51,966.03.
Semiconductor stocks led the recovery, with Intel (INTC) advancing 2% following an upgrade from JPMorgan. Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) rose 1.8%, while Micron Technology (MU) gained approximately 3% as investors cautiously returned to beaten-down chipmakers.
However, concerns over AI infrastructure financing continued to weigh on sentiment. CoreWeave (CRWV) reversed earlier gains to close 0.4% lower despite an upgrade from Goldman Sachs. The stock had plunged more than 25% the previous week amid mounting concerns over debt and borrowing costs.
Monday's rebound followed Wall Street's weakest week since June. The S&P 500 declined nearly 2% last week, while the Nasdaq tumbled 4.5%, ending a four-week winning streak as investors reassessed AI valuations and spending expectations.
Geopolitical tensions also remained in focus as renewed attacks on vessels in the Persian Gulf and strikes targeting Russian and Ukrainian energy infrastructure kept oil markets on edge, adding to concerns over inflation and energy costs.
Attention now turns to a busy corporate earnings calendar, with approximately 70 S&P 500 companies scheduled to report this week. General Motors (GM) will release results before Tuesday's opening bell, followed by United Airlines (UAL) after the close.
Tuesday's economic calendar also includes housing starts and pending home sales, offering fresh insight into the U.S. housing market amid elevated borrowing costs.
With earnings season accelerating and uncertainty surrounding AI investment and energy prices persisting, investors will be watching whether Monday's technology rebound can develop into a broader market recovery.
Oil Holds Near Five-Month High as Middle East Tensions Escalate
Oil prices advanced Tuesday, with Brent crude trading near a five-month high as renewed attacks on energy infrastructure and shipping routes in the Middle East heightened concerns over potential supply disruptions.
Brent futures climbed 0.5% to $110.10 a barrel, after reaching $110.70 Monday, their highest level since May. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude for November delivery rose to $103.91, while the more actively traded December contract gained 0.4% to $98.93.
Geopolitical risks intensified after Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthis claimed responsibility for attacks targeting Saudi energy facilities, including an Aramco site in Yanbu and the Shaybah oilfield, as well as airports and military installations. Saudi authorities had not confirmed the claims.
Shipping security remained a major concern, with at least 18 vessels reportedly attacked over the past two weeks, according to Kpler. Analysts at ING said the continuing threats were sustaining a significant geopolitical risk premium in oil prices.
Meanwhile, uncertainty surrounding U.S. sanctions on Russian energy added another layer of complexity. President Donald Trump announced measures to ease certain Russia-related restrictions, although officials indicated that a final decision remained under review.
Russian crude production increased by 65,000 barrels per day in September to 8.43 million barrels daily, according to the International Energy Agency, but remained substantially below year-earlier levels.
Despite the possibility of additional Russian supply, traders remain focused on the risk of further disruptions across the Gulf. With Brent holding above $110, elevated energy costs could reinforce inflation pressures and complicate the outlook for global interest rates.
