FOMC Minutes Put Fed Policy in Focus 19/08/2026

Market Wrap
US stocks fell for a third straight session on Tuesday as a surge in sovereign bond yields, persistent inflation concerns and elevated oil prices weighed on risk appetite.
The S&P 500 declined 0.7% to 7,691.76, while the Nasdaq Composite dropped 1.3% to 26,289.71. The Dow Jones Industrial Average proved more resilient, slipping 116 points, or 0.2%, to 53,343.40.
Semiconductors were among the biggest drags on the market. Western Digital (WDC) fell 7%, Sandisk (SNDK) dropped 9%, while Marvell Technology (MRVL) and Seagate Technology (STX) lost roughly 8% and 9%, respectively.
Pressure also came from the bond market, where the 30-year Treasury yield reached a fresh 19-year high. Yields have climbed as investors confront the prospect of persistent inflation, particularly with oil prices remaining elevated. WTI crude added another 0.5% Tuesday to settle near $84.94 a barrel.
Geopolitical tensions added to the cautious tone. Hopes for progress in the US-Iran conflict faded after President Donald Trump said there are currently no talks scheduled with Tehran and that the US naval blockade remains fully in effect.
Attention now turns to Wednesday’s release of the latest Federal Reserve meeting minutes. Investors will be looking for more detail on the increasingly divided policy outlook after three officials voted for a rate hike at the July meeting.
Earnings will provide another catalyst, with Target (TGT), TJX Companies (TJX), Lowe’s (LOW) and Analog Devices (ADI) scheduled to report before Wednesday’s opening bell.
Fed Minutes Take on Added Importance Under Warsh
The Federal Reserve’s July meeting minutes, due Wednesday at 2 p.m. ET, could carry unusual weight as investors look for clarity on the central bank’s increasingly divided interest-rate outlook.
At the July meeting, policymakers voted 9-3 to keep rates unchanged at 3.5%-3.75%, with three officials favoring a quarter-point hike. Some economists believe those dissents may represent only part of a broader hawkish shift, with more officials potentially open to tightening if inflation remains persistent.
The minutes have become more important under Fed Chair Kevin Warsh, whose shorter policy statements and limited forward guidance have left markets with fewer clues about how officials are interpreting incoming data. Investors will therefore scrutinize the discussion for signs of what could trigger the Fed’s next move.
The key debate remains inflation. Policymakers have effectively outlined two paths: softer price pressures could allow rates to remain unchanged and potentially fall later, while persistent inflation — fueled by energy prices, tariffs and strong AI-related investment — could require additional tightening.
Recent benign CPI and PPI data have reduced expectations for an immediate hike. Markets now price roughly a 59% probability of a September increase, down from 82% immediately after the July meeting.
Wednesday’s minutes could shift those expectations again, particularly if they reveal broader support for higher rates than the July vote suggested. The Fed will still receive August employment and inflation data before its Sept. 15-16 meeting, while Warsh’s Jackson Hole appearance next week will provide another major opportunity for policy signals.
