FOMC Speakers Take Center Stage Today 12/11/2025

HOT stories for today

Market wrap:

  • Tuesday saw a clear market divergence. The Dow Jones Industrial Average surged more than 550 points to a record close, driven by consumer and health-care stocks, while the Nasdaq Composite slipped and the S&P 500 logged a third straight gain. Investors rotated out of high-valuation tech names into sectors with steadier earnings and lower exposure to the AI trade. Walmart, Home Depot, and McDonald’s lifted the Dow, while Eli Lilly and Johnson & Johnson led gains in health care, the day’s top sector. AI favorites lost ground. Nvidia fell nearly 3% after SoftBank sold a $5.8 billion stake to help finance a $22.5 billion investment in OpenAI, fueling renewed concerns about stretched tech valuations.
  • Michael Burry’s bearish remarks on chipmakers added pressure, though AMD’s Lisa Su projected strong AI-chip growth and 35% annual revenue gains over the next five years. AMD is still closed down 2.65%. In Washington, a potential government shutdown looms as the House and Senate remain divided over protections for health care subsidies. The standoff threatens federal paychecks, flight operations, and SNAP food benefits for 40 million Americans. Asian markets traded mostly higher following Wall Street’s mixed session, while SoftBank shares fell as much as 10%. European stocks are set to open broadly firmer as positive momentum continues.

Shutdown Nears End as House Vote Approaches

  • The record-breaking federal government shutdown appears close to ending, though several steps remain before normal operations resume. After the Senate approved a compromise funding package late Monday, the focus shifts to the House of Representatives, where a vote could come as soon as 4 p.m. Eastern on Wednesday. The outcome is expected to be close, with most Democrats likely to oppose, leaving Speaker Mike Johnson little margin for error, according to Evercore ISI. If the House passes the bill and President Donald Trump signs it, the government will reopen, releasing backlogged economic data and allowing airline operations to resume. Still, recovery will be gradual.
  • The 42-day shutdown has disrupted schedules and caused significant delays in data and staffing. The September jobs report could be published as early as Friday, though early next week is more likely. Airlines will also need time to rebuild capacity and crew schedules after mandated cutbacks. The Senate’s compromise funds parts of the government through Jan. 30 and other agencies for a full year. It reverses worker layoffs, restores missed paychecks, and protects federal employees from further firings through January. In exchange, Republicans agreed to hold a December vote on extending Affordable Care Act subsidies, the issue that sparked the shutdown.

Stocks on the move:

  • Sea Ltd. (SE): The Singapore-based internet and mobile platform fell almost 6%. Third-quarter adjusted EBITDA in its e-commerce business of $186.1 million trailed analysts’ consensus estimate of $214.1 million, and the adjusted EBITDA loss in “other services” of $25.1 million was wider than the expected $15.3 million loss, based on a FactSet survey of Street expectations.
  • Nebius Group (NBIS): The Dutch provider of an AI-centered cloud platform dropped 5% after reporting a wider adjusted third-quarter EBITDA loss and quarterly revenue that fell short of analysts’ estimates, according to consensus numbers compiled by FactSet. Full-year 2025 revenue guidance of $500–550 million also missed analysts’ $575 million expectation.
  • Oklo Inc. (OKLO) Shares fell after the company reported no earnings. Oklo, a $15 billion nuclear technology firm, is developing advanced reactors and posted a quarterly loss of $29.7 million, or roughly 20 cents per share.
  • XPeng (XPEV): U.S.-listed shares rose 4.8% amid growing enthusiasm over the Chinese EV maker’s humanoid technology. The company recently unveiled its next-generation humanoid robot and said it plans to launch robotaxis next year.
